Step 1. Gather supplies. Spend about 15 minutes searching your apartment for scissors only to realize that you had already placed them with the rest of your supplies. Smack head on table and do not move on to step 2 until you have poured yourself a nice, big glass of wine.
Supplies I used: Scissors, pencil, paper trimmer, wrapping paper, double sided tape (I eventually stopped using tape and switched to glue dots), envelopes, bottle of wine and one very interested kitten
Step 2: Trace your envelope on to whatever you would like to use as your template. I used a piece of cardboard.
Step 3. Cut out your template and stick it in the envelope to make sure it's how you want it to look. You can cut it to go to the bottom of the envelope, but to conserve paper mine went about halfway down.
Step 4. Start cuttin'! Because I used wrapping paper I cut strips with scissors then went back and cut the strips using my paper trimmer.
Step 5. Cry because by this point you have finished all the wine. Send your fiancé to the nearest liquor store to purchase more.
Step 6. Stick your liner in the envelope and fold over using a ruler or bone folder. Or if you're ghetto like me and too lazy to find the ruler just use the cardboard template (not recommended). Spend way to much time making sure everything is properly lined up.
Step 7. Remember that the envelopes will be thrown away immediately and that less than 1% of your guests will even notice that your envelopes have liners. Slap some tape on that bad boy and press it onto your envelope. Try not to wrinkle the paper.
Step 8. Cry because you keep wrinkling the paper. Remind yourself again that your guests will not notice. Give up using tape and use glue dots instead. Wish you had thought of that 20 liners ago.
Step 9. Vow to never make envelope liners again and immediately look into purchasing liners for your wedding invitations. (Who are you kidding? This whole project cost you $4 and by the time you are assembling your invitations it will be a distant memory. You are totally going to do it for your wedding invitations too.)
If you want more info I loosely followed this tutorial to make my liners. It's a little bit more straight forward, but a lot less entertaining.
Happy lining!
